Case Description
I have an upper right last molar that was filled too much until it recently broke leaving all almost flush with the gum line with the exception of the inside corner by the next molar. My regular dentist says there is not enough tooth left to crown and the tooth should be extracted. 2 weeks prior to the breaking, cleaning and bite wings showed strong root and no decay. Can a filling build up be done in the center again and a crown attached a bit further up under the gum line? Since I've had RA for over 25 years and on prednisone for the same length of time, is an implant an option for me if the tooth cannot be saved via a crown? I am 52. Thank you.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

As you pointed out there may be another option to extraction of the tooth if enough of the tooth remains and a root canal and post are completed to to allow an anchor to attach the crown securely. Immunocompromised patients taking prednisone can have dental implants successfully. J Periodontol 2004;75:909-913Let us know if we can help.Sincerely,Kurt Calender, DMD

If the tooth has long, strong roots and the fracture has not comprimised the tooth, it should be evaluated for root canal, post build up and crown lengthening. There is no need to pull the tooth if we can save it. If you would like a second opinion, please contact our office for a complimentary consultation. 972-355-8568. www.dazzledentalcare.com

Hello,Thank you for contacting our office. Saving the tooth in question may require heroic efforts that still may not yield the outcome you are hoping for. It may need a root canal to hold a crown along with a post and core and crown lengthening. All of these items may still not be enough. We work closely with an oral surgeon in this area. If you would like Dr. Hinkle to give you a second opinion on the tooth, please call us and I will be happy to schedule you in for a consultation.Once again thank you,Jennifer PearceOffice CoordinatorDr. Curt Hinkle
